A Great Little Spot for Brunch: Slice

Rainy days are the perfect excuse for me to stay in bed late at the weekend, go for brunch somewhere in the city and head to my favourite cinema The Lighthouse in Smithfield to watch a movie.

I was delighted a while ago when I heard The Cake Café had a newly opened sister café called Slice in Stoneybatter which seemed like the perfect place for us to have some grub before heading to a movie on this rainy Saturday afternoon.

Slice is quite small and very popular already but we were lucky enough to get seats before people had to queue outside.

The décor is simple, the tables close together and there is a little corner with a display of Cake Café branded merchandising.

Slice is open for breakfast, weekend brunches, lunch and even dinner a few days of the week. They source Irish products and their menu features simple healthy dishes and comfort food. Breakfast includes porridge, raw muesli, baked eggs, scones, beans on toast and more. Lunches are a selection of salads, sandwiches, soup, meat and fish plates. Dinners are made with quality Irish produce and sound like proper homemade food.

We were in Slice for Saturday brunch. The menu doesn’t include the usual eggs benedict you find elsewhere, this isn’t that kind of place. Spiced carrot and walnut pancakes, organic porridge with different toppings, baked free range eggs and homemade beans on toast are some of the dishes you’ll find.

I had the spiced Irish sausage scramble (€8.90). The scrambled eggs were scrumptious, served with chunks of chopped avocado, a dollop of crème fraiche and sprinkled with coriander.

There were slices of sausages hidden in the eggs and it was lovely. The sourdough toast that came with it was deliciously crusty and already buttered.

Mr. FFID felt like having their homemade beans on toast (€6.90) served with Ed Hick’s merguez sausages, an egg (€1.50) and bacon (€1.50).

This was a proper home-cooked substantial brunch, perfect for someone who had a few drinks the night before. I’m used to spicy merguez sausages which these were not, but they were still tasty.

We washed down our food with their pear, apple and cardamom juice which went down a treat.

I wanted to try their cakes but Mr. FFID ordered an Americano to go and rushed me out to the Lighthouse cinema to see Frank

Slice is a lovely addition to Stoneybatter, the food is simple and honest, the staff are friendly and there is a nice atmosphere. For those who feel too lazy to make breakfast, they even offer a delivery service called ‘Breakfast in bed’ at the weekend.
